20th Anniversary Edmonton Earth Day Festival

noon - 6 pm September 19, 2009
Mc Intrye Park (Gazebo Park - 83rd avenue and 104st); Adventure Park (Kids Fringe area - 85 avenue and 104st) , Old Strathcona , Alberta

The September 19th Earth Day Festival includes:

    * Main stage entertainment in McIntyre Park features musical performances by Dale Ladouceur, Peter Puffin, John Spearn and more.
    * “Junk Wars” artist coordinator, Claire Reid from The Whyte Avenue Art Walk will continue the Junk Wars challenge, sponsored by The Paint Spot. Visual artists creating pieces during the 6 hours of Earth Day. Attendees to Earth Day can vote on their favorite piece, and can also participate creating their own masterpiece in the "Re-Creation Zone".     * Another interesting display of how the old can be renewed will be shown by Rustic Illusions.  Rustic Illusions creates a variety of beautiful items out of old Alberta
    * Recycle Artist, Julie Drew, will also be leading a drop in handmade paper making workshop, using recycled paper and natural found fibres and old jeans.
    * Recycle Artists and Performance Troupe "Garbaganza" will be gracing the festival, creating on the spot fashion shows back and forth between the two sites, displaying their unique wearable art made out of recycled materials.
    * An opportunity to talk to environmental technologies specialists in the Technology Tent.  The Solar Society is one of the groups featured.
    * You will find even more Green Ideas in "The Big Green Tent", in Adventure Park (104st and 85th avenue). "The Big Green Tent" is an 80' x 80' tent that will feature a variety of exhibitors who can help give you ideas as to how to walk a little lighter on the Earth.
    * From environmental organizations, animal and human rights groups, wholistic practitioners to popular eco-businesses like Old Strathcona's own "Earth's General Store" there is lots to see, and learn in "The Big Green Tent". Some of the exhibitors featured in the tent include: Carbonbusters, who created the Carbon Buster's Home Energy Handbook, and their just released book "The Carbon Charter".  Edmonton's own Raising Spaces will be hosting our workshop stage, where you can learn about a variety of topics, including demonstrations by some of Edmonton's leading Eco-Reno specialists.  Popular environmental groups such as The Sierra Club, and Greenpeace will be there to answer your questions. In all, more than 30 groups, organizations and companies are featured in "The Big Green Tent".
    * The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters will host a free bike lock up in Adventure Park. Those people riding their bikes can enter a draw to "Build Their Own Bike", compliments of the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters.
    * The City of Edmonton's Department of the Environment will present a variety of displays in "The Big Green Tent" including:

          o Drainage: "Store it, Don't pour it" campaign (keeping fats from clogging the drains)
          o Waste Management: recycling, composting, grasscycling
          o Natural Areas: biodiversity
          o Parks: plants, insects
          o Transportation: carpooling, alternative transportation
          o Transit: various environmental programs related to transit
          o Environment: City of Edmonton's vision, home energy reduction, reduced (vehicle) idling

    * For families with children, you can participate in the Earth Day Eco-Mystery, as you gather clues posted on in both McIntyre and Adventure Parks. There are also hands-on arts activities, kids environmental games and adventures with Cartoonigans,a sing-along performance on mainstage by Peter Puffin, and more...

Join us for this free fun educational event.  A donation of an item for the Food Bank can be brought to the collection area at the front of the “Big Green Tent.”
