Milestones
As a leader in wildlife conservation, research, and advocacy, CWF is proud of its numerous triumphs. Here's a sampling of our continuing achievements:
- Our dedication to protecting species at risk led to the creation of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) in 1977. The first official list of Canadian species at risk resulted.
- As part of our ongoing commitment to COSEWIC, we funded the development of species status reports and publish informative summary sheets on imperiled wildlife.
- The federal environment minister appointed us to a task force that made recommendations on endangered species conservation in Canada.
- Our report Beneath the Surface: the State of Water Quality in Canada is raising public awareness about the health of Canada's freshwater resources.
- We have funded research and recovery efforts for species at risk, including the whooping crane, ferruginous hawk, burrowing owl, marbled murrelet, beluga whale, swift fox, peregrine falcon, and leatherback sea turtle.
- Our national survey on purple loosestrife infestations across Canada has greatly assisted research efforts and raised awareness about the dangers of exotic species introductions.
- As the principal sponsor of National Wildlife Week, we provide educational materials to many thousands of Canadians to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife and habitat conservation.
- We played a key role in the Biodiversity Advisory Group, which worked with federal and provincial governments to develop a Canadian Biodiversity Strategy. This plan should enable Canada to fulfill its commitment under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.
- Our top notch publications — Canadian Wildlife, Biosphère, WILD, and Your Big Backyard — bring provocative articles and photographs to CWF members of all ages.
- We pressured foreign governments to halt overfishing in the Northwest Atlantic. Our goal was to develop an international, legally binding agreement to manage highly migratory and straddling fish stocks on the high seas.
- Our report entitled The Effects of Forest Management on Wildlife provides industries and governments with practical recommendations to reduce the negative impacts of timber harvesting on wildlife and habitat.
