 The Amazing Turtle Migration

The Amazing Turtle Migration is a great way to learn more about our leatherbacks and the threats they face. Thousands of leatherback turtles gather in Canadian waters each summer and Canada plays a huge role in their survival

With swimming speeds of over nine kilometres per hour, leatherback seaturtles are no slow-moving turtles. Pre-dating the dinosaurs, these giant creatures are a part of Canada’s wildlife heritage and are now a critically endangered species. The Amazing Turtle Migration is a great way to learn more about our leatherbacks and the threats they face. Thousands of leatherback turtles gather in Canadian waters each summer and Canada plays a huge role in their survival.

In May of 2011, CWF competed with other non-profit organizations for $100,000 funding from Shell’s Fuelling Change Program. With the help of supporters like you, the Amazing Turtle Migration, won! With this funding, scientists will apply satellite tags to female leatherback turtles off the coast of Nova Scotia during the summer of 2012. The migration race will get underway in early fall when migration to their southern nesting beaches begins. Stay tuned for the race!
