 Fish Ways Activities From Saskatchewan

Enjoy these lively Fish Ways lesson plans, as presented at the Saskatchewan Outdoor & Environmental Education Association in September 2009.

Like the fishways engineered to help fish travel around man-made obstacles such as dams or wiers, Fish Ways has been written to create a caring public that will ensure that the ways of fish, and their gifts to us, will not be lost to future generations.  Select a lesson plan below to begin your journey into the ways of the fish:

What Does a Body Tell Us? »
Students will experience the advantages and disadvantages of two major fish body shapes in a role-play/relay race.

The Spawning Adventure »
Students will play a board game in small groups, and discover some of the risks, needs and benefits experienced by migrating and spawning fish.

Sing a Fish »
Students will partially develop the lyrics of a song to enable them to describe several familiar Canadian fish species.

Fish Scales and Melodies »
Students will learn a song about Canadian fish and then compose additional verses.

Fish Nursery »
By becoming fish in a board game/simulation, students will experience some of the processes and problems associated with fish culture.

Fish Fate »
Students will play a board game which introduces them to a broad range of factors within the environment that can affect fish populations.

All lesson plans adapted from Fish Ways: Primary/Junior, with permission from the Canadian Wildlife Federation and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
