Rivers to Oceans Week

March 26, 2009

How can Canadians join together to make a difference for the future of Canada’s water? With awareness and stewardship – our 2009 theme for Rivers to Oceans Week from June 8 to 14! Water stewardship is about actively taking responsibility for the quality of water and the world’s valuable water sources.

With one less chemical flowing down the drain or one less piece of trash washing away from a beach or riverbank, we can change the fate of Canada’s waters. The first step in water stewardship starts in the home, in the classroom, and in the lives of every Canadian who chooses to be water aware.

Rivers to Oceans Week reminds us that caring for the health of all water flowing through our watersheds — local springs, creeks, streams, lakes, rivers, wetlands and even groundwater — also improves the quality of Canada’s oceans. Stewardship is an activity that every single Canadian can play a role in regardless of where they live.

While Oceans Day raises awareness about the Earth’s oceans, Canadian Rivers Day honours the history, heritage and important value that our rivers have to our beautiful country. Since 2007, these two celebratory days have been brought together into one united awareness week sharing a central watershed theme.
