Hard Work and Initiative Generates Outdoor Learning

With the co-operation of landowners Jim Beck and the Hickman family students from Southern Kings Consolidated School in Montague, P.E.I., turned an adjacent woodlot into an enjoyable and interactive learning environment.  Teachers, as well as many students, produced a 2.25-kilometre interpretative nature trail through the woodlot named the Southern Kings Natural Trail.

The nature facilitates hands-on outdoor studies along field edges, hedgerows, a wetland area and mixed woodlands.  Students also researched and produced information brochures, an entrance sign and 10 permanent interpretive stations along the trail.  In turn, CWF proudly funded the installation of benches along the trail.

The trail provides a wonderful opportunity for current and future students of Southern Kings and the surrounding community to discover the variety of wildlife and habitats found in the area. CWF believes that you must first understand something before you can care for that something. Thanks to the trail, and the initiative of a dedicated group of kids and teachers, students can now explore and learn in an ideal outdoor classroom.
