*(Neonicotinoids or “neonics” are a group of insecticides that are chemically related to nicotine. Neonics are now the most widely used insecticides in the world. However, mounting evidence suggests unforeseen, negative effects on non-target species and the environment.)

WILD About Birds Trees and Shrubs

Plant a bird-friendly garden

Canada is home to approximately 451 bird species and billions of individual birds. Despite their numbers, the threats leading to declines in North American bird populations continue to grow. These include loss of habitat, invasive species, pesticides, toxic chemicals, pollution, cat predation, decrease in insect prey numbers, climate change, disease and death resulting from man-made obstacles like wind turbines and impact with windows of buildings during migration. As a result, nearly 15 per cent of native bird species are at risk of extinction. There is something you can do to help improve life for birds in your area.

For starters, incorporate trees and shrubs from CWF’s exclusive WILD About Birds collection into your garden and landscaping projects. Grown by partners including award-winning Willowbrook Nurseries, each tree and bush is specifically selected to be part of your bird-friendly landscape design, attracting a variety of bird species back to enjoy these nurturing habitats. Planting a diversity of trees and shrubs that produce seeds (cedar, maple) and nuts (oak, beech) and shrubs that produce fruit (dogwoods, service berries), and perennials that produce seeds is a great way to offer natural food sources for birds. Look for CWF’s WILD About Birds trees and shrub collection at participating Home Depot locations beginning in April 2021 (*While trees and shrubs can be ordered online they will not be available for shipping).

Frequenly Asked Questions

Are these plants free of herbicides and neonicotinoids?
Absolutely! We partnered with Medallion Plants to find the perfect collection of pollinator plants and grew them without the use of harmful chemicals, including herbicides and pesticides such as neonoicotinoids.

Where can I buy a pollinator plant kit?
Our kits are available at participating Home Depot locations across Canada. Prices may vary. Plants should be located in the garden section. Home shipping of CWF pollinator plant kits is not available. Trees and shrubs can only be purchased and picked up in participating locations in Ontario only. Find a location near you >

Are the Plants I’m Buying Native to my Area?

Please note our distribution area for plants covers quite a few markets across Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in the west, Ontario and Quebec in the east and up to Thunder Bay. It's important to us that the plant selections work well for all of these regions, as we cannot accurately predict the distribution of packs to each market. This is also impacted by what is available from local suppliers as a lot of the wild/true species are not commonly produced plants. We are working diligently with all involved to foster a wider supply of native seeds for production. In the meantime, we strive to pick the best native plants being shipped to each region.

Garden Habitat Certification

Certify your garden as a “Wildlife-friendly Habitat” Raise awareness. Inspire others. Make it official.

Can one person make a difference for wildlife? Absolutely.

A great place to start is in the garden. By garden, we mean any outdoor space that is influenced by a green (or not so green!) thumb. Everything from veggie gardens to water gardens, acres of land to containers on a patio, a meadow maintained for butterflies to a curated perennial bed, shoreline properties to urban plots – all outdoor spaces can help wildlife. No matter your location, level of experience, garden style or budget, your garden can be beautiful and beneficial for wildlife.

By joining Canadians who make their gardens wildlife-friendly, you help increase suitable habitat for local and migratory wildlife, some of which may be species at risk. As more land is developed for human activities, each wildlife-friendly garden is a haven that can act as a stepping stone between larger areas of habitat, essential for many species’ survival.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Garden Habitat Certification recognizes Canadians who make their home, school, business or community gardens suitable for wildlife by certifying their outdoor space as a “Wildlife-friendly Habitat”.
